CAMBODIA & ITS MAGNIFICENCE: ANGKOR WAT
05/09/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

Angkor Wat is a must when visiting Cambodia, it is the largest religious monument in the world and was built in the 12th century. We spent 6 days in Siem Reap and spent 3 days at the Angkor Wat temples.

Afterwards we headed to Battambang. There is not much to see but it was interesting to find out more about the sad history of the Khmer Rouge in the 70’s.

We continued our journey to Phnom Penh by boat (7 hrs) and saw a lot of floating villages. This was amazing! In Phnom Penh we went to visit Cordell and Tamara. Cordell is an old friend of Patrick. Last time they met was 12 years ago. Just crazy and nice to see them again!

Beeing in PP we visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum alias S21. After you finish a tour like that you definitely need several glasses of wine, beer or other strong liquor. For those who like reading and want to know more about the Khmer Rouge regime I do recommend “First they killed my father” from Loung Ung. Don’t forget your tissues when reading this book…..

Cambodia is one of our highlights so far. Cambodians are the nicest people we met in Asia and the landscape is beautiful. We just loved it!

Big Hug!

BORNEO (MALAYSIA): IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE
24/08/2013 In BLOG No Comment

What an amazing adventure we had in Borneo. We spent 2 days at Kota Kinabalu where we had the best food so far. For fish lovers that’s your place to be! The night market is full of fresh fish that you can choose for dinner, hmmmmm really delicious!
What about the Sabah people? Actually we met a huge family in a traditional longhouse and they invited us to spend 3 days at their homes. We had a great time and were totally spoiled! We did some sightseeing, Karaoke singing, traditionel dancing and of course all the family cooked local delicious food for us. It was an unforgettable experience, thank you for that Sulina, Terrence,
Rosna and the rest of the family.
Borneo is also known for its jungle which was another highlight for us and we spent some days in the middle of it in a Nature Lodge at Kinabatangan river. It was like beeing in the Amazon. We saw a crocodile twice, lots of Monkeys (Macaque, Proboscis monekys, Silvered Longur), mangrove cat snake, sleeping birds, rhinocoros hornbills, sea eagles, kingfisher and monitor lizzards etc. The most impressive was a 4m-long pythonwhich was found just in front of the small restaurant of the lodge we stayed in. Well, that was incredible and at the same time very scary. I have to admit that I did not sleep well that night….

TERIMA KASIH INDONESIA
05/08/2013 In BLOG No Comment

After our diving experience we spent a week in the cultural and artistical town of Ubud. We rented a motorbike to be more independant and we visited really nice temples, rice fields and the famous monkey forest ( Patrick didn’t feel so confortable with these quite agressive monkeys around us!). We also saw a dancing performance where the women can move amazingly! Last but not least we did rafting through dense rainforest and that was great!!

We are now in Legian, Bali, where the waves are ideal for learning how to surf. Now you can call me ‘Kelly Slater 2‘… hehe, I have to stay I also had a great instructor alias Patrick!

Today is our last day in Indonesia so we are going to kill the wave before continuing our journey!

ISLAND HOPPING: BALI-GILI-LOMBOK-BALI
24/07/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

Here we are again!!  As you know we have a stressfull life so it’s not easy to keep you updated as often as we’d like to. Yeah, we know, poor us ;)

Only 10 days left in Indonesia before moving on. After Bali we spent some time at the Gili Islands, a group of three small islands next to Lombok. During our stay there I got my certificate as an Open Water Diver and Patrick is now an Advanced Diver. This means I can now dive wordlwide, yesssssss! Diving there was amazing because we saw huge green turtles and Jerôme, my diving instructor was really awesome!! I loved it and after this experience we can’t wait to explore more of the underwater world.

Indonesia is a nice group of islands but not very ideal for backpackers like us mainly because of the transport. It is difficult to go from A to B because there is no public transport/ hardly any. We always have to take a private taxi/ organised transport which is really expensive.

Now we are  in Lombok where we drove on a motorbike to some very nice beaches. After two days here on the island tomorrow we will go to Ubud/ Bali. We need to get in touch with some more Indonesian culture and cannot lie on the beach for days, activities needed!!!!!

2nd STOP INDONESIA: THE DREAM OF SWIMMING IN THE SEA
10/07/2013 In BLOG 4 Comments

Here we are in a warm and humid place. During our last days in India we were very much looking forward to Indonesia and overall to relax on great beaches! We arrived in Jakarta and were well surprised about this city. Quite clean and really friendly people. That was a big change for me. Moreover the food is fantastic. Aaah it’s fine to eat proper meat again and juicy fruits hmmm! Yet the traffic is crazy here, you end up in a traffic jam all the time and it is very polluted. Indo is famous for singing karaoke and we did it. Patrick even sang more than one song!! You cannot be shy because you have your own private cabin!! I loved it :)

After 2 days in Jakarta we decidedto go to nice islands for great beaches and we heard about Karimunjava. From Jakarta we 1 st had a 6 hrs train and then 2 hrs busride. Arriving in Jepara we wanted to take the ferry but it was already fully booked. Yes, we forgot that Indonesians also have school holidays. So we booked tickets for the day after. Well, and the day after the boats were unable crossing due to 5 m swell/waves. Oh nooooooo!! that was a bit disappointing. As no one knew if the weather will improve we decided to take another 8hrs bus drive to Yogyakarta where we got bed bugs again!!

Enough is enough we decided to go to Bali by bus. We made a stop at the Bromo and Ijien craters. We woke up once at 3am and the night after at 1am to see the blue light and the sunrise. Just amazing and worth waking up so early!!! Yeaaaah, now we are in Bali and it is really a different ambiance! A lot of tourits but its just great to relax at the beach and do nothing else…..

LAST WEEK: FROM THE HIMALAYAS TO DEHLI
01/07/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

After Pangong lake, our goal was to reach the highest motorable pass in the world. We were waiting for an improvment of the bad weather conditions. After a couple of days we tried to go up and we were really optimistic but at 14km from the pass the road was closed!! Such a pity and it was bloody cold driving up there by bike! The only award was the landscape, snow around us, yaks everywhere….aaaah just great. After this attempt we decided not to stay longer in Leh and drive to Dehli to catch our flight. We traveled with Laurence and Sam, the two English guys.

Once again the road to Dehli was just amazing. Our first stop was in Dras close to Pakistan. I must say, this was not really pleasant due to the number of army around us to prevent or try to prevent any attack. For your info, Dras is located in the region of Kashmir where some people claime their independance or prefer belonging to Pakistan instead of India. That’s why there is this big tension in this region. Anyway, we left at 5am to go to Srinagar the next day. This was the 2nd worst road after our Rothang La pass experience. The road was just wide enough for one bus/ truck at a time and in really bad shape. Additionally scary as on one side there was a steep decent approx 300m sraight down. We arrived all in one piece at Srinagar where we rested in a houseboat for 2 days, that was great. We had a small boat to cross the lake or just chilled!

It took us 5 days to get to Dehli and we were happy to give the motobike back, enough driving for a bit and my bum thanks me (Emi) as well :) In Dehli we were sleeping at Ajey’s for 4 days. That was a lot of luxury  for us. We had our own bedroom and bathroom (with hot water!) a cook and personal driver. That was fine to have a proper bed (actually the best one since 3 months) and a daily shower (we were not used to anymore). Thank you Ajey and Anki!

FAREWELL भारत / INDIA
28/06/2013 In BLOG 3 Comments

Here we are….not in India anymore. We left the country yesterday and that was an incredible adventure. The first 3 months passed so fast, well let’s say the 2 last months did. The 1st one was quite difficult. But anyway, at the end we had a really great time and the people we met just made this trip unforgettable!!

Our highlights were the Himalayas, the Ellora caves and Udaipur (Rajasthan). Yeah, Patrick and I do have the same taste ;)

There is just one thing I regret: we couldn’t reach the highest pass in the world because of  bad weather conditions. Just for this reason I may come back to this incredible country!

I am glad we started our RWT with India, the toughest one! We are more than ready for our next adventure!!!

PANGONG LAKE
11/06/2013 In BLOG 4 Comments

In Leh we met again with Masa and David ( a friend from France we met in Vashisht). After a couple of relaxing days in a nice hostel all together we decided to go to Pangong lake next to the Chinese border. Masa, David, Andrew ( from Canada) rented a bike and they joined us to go there, all in all 8 different people on 7 different motor bikes- a great group!!!!!

We passed the 3rd highest pass in the world on the way and got to this amazing lake with great colours.

Now we can say that we have been swimming at 4.380m hight! That was bloody cold and everything shrinked :) (Patrick)

Enjoy the pictures.

INTO THE HIMALAYAS BY ROYAL ENFIELD
11/06/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

What an adventure and highlight of our trip these last 5 days have been!Initially very difficult, we thought never to make it to Leh because the motor bike(s) we rented  broke constantly down on us and we spent 134h at the mechanics, crazy… we woke up twice at 5 am and 4 am to be ahead of the traffic to the Rothang La pass and both times before even reaching the first climb our bikes had severe problems…arghhhhh!!! Why ahead of the traffic? Well, every Indian of this planet wants to touch the snow and drive to the pass –  the result is 1 billion jeeps, cars and minivans wanting to reach the pass – MADNESS.

So after all this start up issues, we finally had our  2 nd Royal Enfield ready to take us to Leh. We made it in 5 days,  475 km.

Day 1: from Vashiht to Keylong. This was the most difficult part of the trip. Meters of snow, melting and creating mud and deep rivers to cross, big stones, bumpy roads – we had it all! This was so hard that we even thought to drive back to Vashisht if the roads continue to be so though.

We stayed 2 days in Keylong to rest and at the same time the bike got checked. Result: engine problem!! The mechanics from Vashisht had to bring our 3rd bike to Keylong! Crazy that they gave us such a shit twice! We were really frustrated. In Keylong we met 2 really nice guys, Ajay and Jatin who were in the same Guesthouse and we had the same destination. So after the 3rd bike arrived we continued our trip all together.

Even if the roads were still in bad condition, the scenary was breathtaking. It is one of the most beautiful motobike routes in the world. We were most of the time alone on the road… What a sensation that was and easy to forget all the problems we had in the beginning!

Day 3: we met Sam and Laurence at Sachu. These 2 guys are making a trip from Australia to UK by small postal motobikes!

Day 4: from Sachu to Pang. This was one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the trip. On the way we had to cross a bridge which collapsed couple of hours before:

Solution 1: waiting 2 days – actually not an option because we were short of fuel

Solution 2: pay a 1000 Roupies to Indian road workers who  carried our bikes on the other side of the valley. Everything worked really well except that while our bike was carried to the other side my camera got stolen and I was really upset! ( Emi)

Day 5: we passed the 2nd highest pass in the world and we were realllllly proud having done that!  The same day after a long downhill descent we  arrived in Leh.

We will never forget this trip: a challenging but unforgettable journey where we met great poeple and had mindblowing sceneries and views!!!

Truly amazing!

AT HIMALAYAS FEET
21/05/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

What could be better than fresh mountain air?  We are now at the feet of the Himalayas. The nice village is called Vashisht next to Manali in the north of India. Every day we breath deeply and take a natural hot bath (at 5 am!!) to get new energy and built up strength for the months to come. The temperatures are pleasant (less than 45 degrees) the village calm (no cars and tuk tuks are allowed) and we enjoy the relaxing atmosphere surrounded by waterfalls.

One more week here to rest, do some trekking and yoga, before the biggest adventure in India begins: driving a Royal Enfield motorbike through the Himalayas!

For now some pictures from Vashisht!

A WEEK OFF
12/05/2013 In BLOG 2 Comments

Namaste everybody!

We are in Rishikesh, a holy city on the edge of the Ganges river. You come here to find yourself and if you need help to do so there are hundreds of Ashram-Yoga- and Meditation centers. Also can you speak with Gurus about the meaning of life.

What do we think about this place? It’s ”SHIT!!!!!!” as we both were suffering from severe food poisining and had to stay in the guest house for one week. Luckely we had friends to talk to: bed bugs from Agra……great that was!

Today we finally feel better and continue the journey towards the north of the country. Very much looking forward to the Himalayas!

No pictures this time :)

FROM RAJ TO TAJ
05/05/2013 In BLOG 3 Comments

After the blue city Jodhpur we went to the brown one – Jaisalmer. We got a cheap hotel for 3 Euro and afterwards found out that it was a Mafia hotel (cheap rooms but forced to buy expensive camel safaris) Luckely though we didn’t have to play their game and organised a different tour:

The dream was a romantic camel safari sleeping in the dunes with camp fire and the sky full of stars……the reality was a sand storm, strong wind, no stars, no fire, rain and a lot of sand beatles and wild dogs around us….well, an unforgettable night. :)

Next and last stop in Rajasthan was Pushkar, a holy place where we met Masa from Japan. We had a really good time relaxing.

Today we are in Agra and saw one of our highlights so far – the Taj Mahal! Really amazing and a must-see in India!
